Accessorise Your Way to a New-look Bathroom

Budget won't stretch to a bathroom refit? Choose accessories that can work a little magic

Pick stop-them-in-their-tracks mirrors

Look for unusual bathroom accessories that make an instant impression. Search out a mirror with an ornate frame and double up if you're lucky enough to have twin basins. Position on a shelf for an easy alternative to wall-fixed sheet mirror. If you want hooks to fit to the back of a door, don't underestimate the impact of an ornate accessory like these antler versions - a few unusual designs have the potential to transform a room.

Introduce plant life

Don't forget the bathroom as a potential display space for potted plants or cut flowers - they bring vibrancy, freshness and a little bit of nature to what can be a very clinical space. If you don't fancy the watering/feeding maintenance on an ongoing basis, go faux instead - there are some fabulously convincing artificial plants out there. Place on window sills for maximum impact - the arrangements here are a key component of a balanced and symmetrical decorating scheme. Pick clear glass vases that won't detract from the displays and pick out the green tones with a few co-ordinating accessories.

Work those windows

Don't forget windows when you're planning your bathroom refresh. Smarten up an existing Roman or roller blind with a length of bobble trim - it's easy to hand stitch in place if you don't have a sewing machine. Line window panes with decorative frosted film to freshen up panes with a touch of pattern and bring out any accent shades in the blind by swapping out storage boxes or bathroom linen in a matching shade.

Use accessories to add an accent shade

Brighten a bathroom in an instant by replacing three or four existing accessories with versions in a matching vibrant shade. The sassy yellow of the table and towels in this grey and white bathroom creates a whole new feel with minimal effort. Where you can, place accent accessories next to reflective surfaces so you double the impact.

Show off toiletries

Clear the clutter as your first step to a streamlined bathroom. Stow unsightly plastic bottles of product out of sight, but keep nicer looking toiletries back for display. Choose pretty bowls in different sizes and pile high with soaps and brushes. Look for designs that complement the style of your bathroom - these stone-effect versions mimic the natural materials elsewhere, while a giant clam filled with shells and pebbles picks up a seaside theme.

Don't ignore the small things

In an all-white bathroom scheme, introduce the tiniest touches of colour for a serene, sophisticated refresh. When buying toiletries, such as liquid soaps, hand creams or moisturisers, look for brands that you can colour co-ordinate. Continue your shade with other items, such as hand towels and containers. Pick purple for a glamorous touch - in this room the lilac introduced on the blind filters through to bottles, towels and pretty bud vases.
